Farmer-Driven Organization
New York Farm Viability Institute grant funding has helped project leaders produce and disseminate a variety of workbooks, fact sheets, case studies and other resources and tools that may help New York farmers make decisions about production and business issues at the farm.
Some examples:
-
The Sustainable Vineyard Practices Grower Workbook provides grape growers a guideline for self-assessment of fertilizer and pesticide practices in the vineyards and offers a framework for developing action plans to make changes that have positive environmental consequences.
-
The New York State Maple Confections Notebook provides instruction in turning maple syrup into high-value confections, including maple cream, maple sugar and more.
-
The Transition to Organic spreadsheet is an interactive tool that allows growers to assess the economics to growing organic field crops for dairy cows.
-
Cover Crops for Vegetable Growers is a web-based interactive tool for selecting cover crop varieties based on an individual farmer's soil management goals and planting and harvesting capacity.
These are just some of the resources available because of NYFVI-funded projects. Projects develop resources that are available free or at cost to farmers in the state. To obtain these resources and many others, use the search tool in the upper right hand section of this page.
Type in keywords related to your area of interest. Click the ``go'' button. The website will generate a list of applicable projects. Each project abstract contains information about how to obtain educational resources.
